The call to prayer still echoes forth five times a day from the top of the Tomb of the Askias

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, the Tomb of the Askias was built by Askia Mohamed in 1495 (three years after Columbus discovered America and the same year that DaVinci finished his classic "The Last Supper").  Whether or not Askia Mohamed is actually interred within the pyramid-shaped structure is subject to some debate, although other historical aspects of this interesting site are well-known.

Askia Mohamed, a ruler of the Songha Empire in the 15th century, undertook a great hajj to Mecca after taking power from the Sonni dynasty.  His trip to Mecca took two years (one going, one coming back) crossing almost the entire length of the Sahara not once but twice both on foot and with horses.  Along the way he was amazed when he visited the Egyptian pyramids.  Undoubtedly, stirred by the power of his pilgrimmage as well as influenced by the pyramids, he brought back wood from Mecca, which, as legend has it, he then used to construct his own, slightly-smaller mud pyramid in Gao.  It still exists today as the Tomb of the Askias.

Visitors can visit the covered prayer areas

Still an active and popular mosque in Gao, the Tomb of the Askias can be visited along with a short, guided tour that includes visiting the prayer areas as well as climbing to the top of the tomb.  The top of the Tomb affords a great view of the entire city of Gao as well as, on clear days, the Niger River and the Pink Dune.

Wood supposedly brought all the way from Mecca in the 15th century
